Shakespeare in the Park

A series of classes in three parts….

Class 1: “Dramaturge”

Instructor: Andrew Doyle

This class will be an introduction to the technical requirements for performing Shakespeare. Shakespeare wrote in early modern English for Elizabethan audiences. Those audiences were accustomed to that particular meter and style. While those aspects of language are still around today, most people are not used to listening to it or speaking it for extended amounts of time. Shakespeare was also an actor. In Elizabethan times, there was no director. All of the rehearsals fell to the writer and actors. Shakespeare used his scripts to give directions to the actors. The words informed the actors not only of their actions but also of their thoughts. Shakespeare was often performed outdoors. A well rounded voice was necessary for each performer. Shakespeare is as popular today as it has ever been because it is adaptable. Once an actor can command the language an endless possibility of interpretations become available.

Class 2: “Body, Voice and Presence”

Instructor: Kevin McManus

Many players are intimidated by the works of William Shakespeare. It is a daunting task to interpret the poetry of his texts and craft a complex, fluid piece of art. It takes a focused mind to fully comprehend the structure of the writing, and even then, bringing innate, human nuances to a performance can be difficult. This course seeks to alleviate the fears associated with classical theater. We want to show the joy of working on these historical masterpieces. In this section, we will work together to become good creative collaborators with the Bard of Stratford-upon-Avon.

April 14th – May 19th      Saturdays 10:00 am -12:00      Mondays: 7:00pm – 9:00 pm

Class 3: “Rehearsal and Performance”

Instructors: Andrew Doyle & Kevin McManus

Now that we have developed a better under-standing of the text and ourselves as per-formers, it is time to really dig-in. Theater is a process that begins with casting. We will start by practicing audition techniques that help actors get jobs in the industry. Students will receive role assignments and will work along-side each other to build their characters through a series of rehearsals. The class will culminate with a presentation of one of the popular comedies by William Shakespeare. This is the section in which we put all of our knowledge and learning to work. It will be an exciting opportunity for experienced and novice performers to immerse themselves in this complex and exhilarating form of performance art.
